Akela is a happy and spunky 5-year-old female retriever mix who loves to play fetch, walks well on a leash, knows how to sit, and is crate trained. Although shy at first with strangers, she warms up nicely once someone is familiar - especially if they have treats! This sweet girl adores her foster's grandson and will do best with children over the age of 10, who are patient, supervised and willing to be gentle with her. Akela has learned to come when called most of the time, but does get distracted by butterflies, passing cars, deer and other dogs, so is best kept on a leash when outside with no fence. Akela is very lovable and will flourish in an environment with an owner willing to give her love, attention, playtime, and continued, consistent confidence-building training. Akela plays well with her foster companion; a blind and deaf female, and manages herself well around other nice dogs. She is okay with the cat at her foster’s house who is used to dogs. Akela is very food motivated, and will eat things she thinks might be good for her or fun to eat even if they are not, so she needs to have a close eye kept on her when she is loose in the house and yard. A delightfully sweet and sensitive dog, Akela will make a wonderful addition to the right family. Akela is available for adoption in Texas and the Northeast.
