Harper Lee prefers to take her time. While some dogs charge into a new situation, Harper Lee likes to sit back, observe, and decide for herself that everything is okay. Once she does, you’ll be rewarded with one of her favorite gestures—a gentle nuzzle from a dog who has learned that people can be trusted after all.

Life wasn’t always predictable for Harper Lee. Rescued from the streets as a young puppy, she spent her early months without the stability most dogs take for granted. When she first arrived in foster care, the world felt big and uncertain, but patient guidance and a steady routine have helped her discover how good home life can be.

Today, this Retriever for adoption enjoys exploring the yard, spending time with her trusted humans, and heading out for nature walks where she can follow interesting scents at her own thoughtful pace. Her canine friends have been an essential part of that growing confidence. Harper Lee looks to other dogs for reassurance and takes her cues from them, so she needs a home with at least one friendly, confident resident dog. For Harper Lee, a canine sibling isn’t simply a bonus—it’s an important part of helping her feel secure.

She’s comfortable relaxing at home for about four to six hours, so a working household can absolutely suit her with a little planning. A midday visit, dog walker, or somewhat flexible schedule would keep an eight-to-ten-hour workday from becoming her everyday routine.

If you’re hoping to adopt a rescue dog who values quiet companionship, thoughtful connections, and adventures taken at her own pace, this rescue dog for adoption could be a wonderful match. Addicus’ Legacy Dog Rescue has watched Harper Lee grow into an affectionate girl who is ready to keep building her confidence alongside her people—and her canine buddy.

HOW TO APPLY

Please fill out an adoption application and be sure to completely fill in all fields, as our volunteer adoption coordinators will only follow up on completed applications.

Our coordinators will follow up on all the vet and personal references that you provide and then reach out to you to schedule an interview. It may take a few days as we are 100% volunteer based and our wonderful coordinators also have jobs and families. Please be patient and know that we will be in touch!

Our interviews are typically around 30 minutes in length. We will talk about your home, yard, current and past pets, kids, your schedule and what kind of dog you are looking for. If we feel the dog you applied for is not a good fit, we will suggest a different dog for you to consider.
